Chicago Fluxfest 2016!!
May, 26 2016 DO IT NOW exhibit at the Joan Flasch Artistbook Library,
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
I sent in my collection of found correspondence and a tribute piece to Richard Canard--24 anchovy tins with a stamped image inside. The stamp is a half person/half fish and I called them "Fish Chics" and "Manchovies". I did not take pictures in my haste to get them mailed before the deadline.
I also sent a long knife, but that didn't make it into the show as it scared Keith Buchholz and I totally get that. At least it will forever be in the archive.
I was only able to make it to one day of the fluxfest, but it was an amazing experience. I feel like I was able to go back to kindergarten.

Met Richard Canard and All I Got Was an Amazing Experience!! Finale
Well our first year of the "Feed the Richard" event went extremely well.
This is the final installment documenting this territable event.
Before I visited Richard Canard, I asked for questions from mail artists.
I prepared for my big interview by stuffing myself with awkwardly paired desserts.
I knew this wasn't going to be easy.
It was like pulling shark teeth to get the answers out of him, but here it is-- everything you ever wanted to know about RC, but were too afraid to ask --possibly embellished for entertainment purposes, but probably not.
(The names of the question posers have been omitted in case they disprove the adage that there is no such thing as a stupid question. )
It has been some time now so I might have forgotten some things, so I hope dear Lucky Pierre can fill in!
1. What is your favorite vegetable?
Squash. My Mother wasn't a fan of cooking, and this was the easiest for her to make.
2. Do you remember your dreams? Any recurring ones? Any in which you have superpowers?
Generally No. Now and then I will remember my dreams. If I spent more time concentrating I might be able to (remember dreams), but generally the world takes over.
3. Where were you when you found out Ray Committed Suicide?
At home in Thomasville, NC. Someone must have called me or I heard it on the news.
4. Pepsi or Coke? Coke. RC admires the design, but he likes Kombucha. I think he also said he likes coffee, tea, and beet juice. Really not sure on the beat juice thing.
5. What do you do with your time?
I go through magazines, watch and feed the birds, watch some tv-which CAN include Jerry Springer, the History channel and NatGEO, etc.
6. Have you ever bought anything JUST because you wanted to use it for mail art?
Yes. (I don't remember the story exactly but he bought okra to use as a pun for a mail artists' name--something like Okakroke)
7. What are some things you did as a child?
Tap dancing, cub scouts, choir, piano , football--the regular stuff. Then ended up going from Military School to Art School.
8. What is your advice to a teen searching for direction ?
Continue to be who you are. Continue to do what you are doing.
9. What did you want to be when you grew up?
No Idea.
RICHARD is ever the diplomat and a wonderful phrase he uses is:
"He/She has great skills that cover a wide range of territory."
"Expresses him/herself well and covers a wide range of territory."
Other quote I remember with no remembered context:
"I am not as smart as Donald Trump"
Random things I wrote down and wish I remembered what they meant:
slug garden wrote RJ we put blue food coloring in the grits and I poured beet juice on the rice
Alaska (Bear) bare arms NY Correspon "dunce" School Western Carolina U
Rev Richard C, the minister paw paw seeds Hairy High
Sister Karita Pop Images Cherokee Green Salad Cullowee Valley of the Lily Station 11
We left Richards' house at 2 AM ish and decided to drive through the night as Mason had work the next day.
THIS CLIP BEGINS WITH ADVICE FROM RICHARD CANARD TO ALL MAIL ARTISTS EVERYWHERE!!
...followed by rare footage of carbondale at 2:30 am.
And the big finish is the stylings of THE Amazing MRS. Lucky PIERRE!!!!!
Lucky Pierre is kind of like a djinn, or genie--a talisman, a good luck charm, but that is all I can say.
She is a MASTERFUL "hooper" as she called it. I didn't realize that was a 'thing' anymore. She is amazing at it.
Doesn't it make you want to run out and grab a hoola hoop and try it? Actually I DID try it, and I suck.
She takes it with her wherever she goes, and plans on teaching hooping at Camp Canard. I think she is calling it "Hoops for Dupes".
Well, this is the end of the lotsofparts story of how I met Richard Canard and Lucky Pierre.
I loved meeting them both very much as they both express themselves well and cover wide ranges of territory.
I can rest easy now that Richard was fed.
Feeding the Richard was brought to you by the creators of the (tm) Lucky Pierre (tm) line of hoola hooping exercise gear and fashion accessories

Met Richard Canard and all I Got Was an Amazing Experience!! AND a T-shirt!! PART II
Part II
Meeting with Richard Canard April 15th, 2016 (random aside: tax deadline day)
This is the receipt from the co-op. The store was a maze and we wandered around like stunned flies. It did not seem to follow any logical order. Maybe co-ops are non-linear. I don't know. Elgin doesn't have one yet.
A young enthusiastic employee with a name like Brandon or Braden, helped us find everything and rang us up. We got on the subject of dumpster diving because I told RC the original plan was to make a freegan meal from dumpster scraps.
The checker said Carbondale was known for dumpster diving. We were told by more than one person that students, in a hurry to leave town, threw everything out. He mentioned his project called "Curb Couches of Carbondale" (part in jest/part serious).
We have our fair share of ugly curb couches in Elgin as well. I told him to hashtag it so I could find it. Who knows if he will, but I love the idea #curbcouchesofcarbondale.
Maybe I'll start a #curbcouchgallery, but someone probably already did.
While we busted the myth that RC lives off of microwaveable food, we DID find this cookbook. No doubt a gift? a hint from a concerned loved one? It looked like it had never been cracked open. Not even once. It still had that bookstore smell. Our aprons were better.
This next series of photos is a touchy subject. It resulted in the biggest cat fight since, well, ever.
RC shared these with LP, or she found them herself among the millions of boxes all over his house.
These are pen and ink drawings made by RC when he was a teenager (around Mason's age he said (18). He called them "primitive" in his characteristic self-effacing manner.
So how did these amazing drawings cause a vicious fur flying cat fight? How?????
Because RC offered them to us and LP and I wanted the same ones. (We still need to make copies of them. These drawings should NOT be sitting in a box on Emerald Lane.)
This left RC completely befuddled and he refused to decide who would get what. It is a wise man that knows not to get in the middle of a cat fight. All women have claws. Very very sharp claws.
We worked it out, but I still think LP might suck out my blood next time I see her. That's how she is. It is part of her charm. It got ugly and then it got pretty again.
The boxes all over RC's house are not full of junk. It is clear he does NOT like to throw things away, BUT every box he opened was like a treasure chest--full of history, art supplies, years of mail art etc.
Even though we told him not to clean or stress over our impending visit, he apparently had to move boxes so we had somewhere to sit and could use the table. Someone asked where RC makes his mail art magic. He makes mail art at the kitchen table that you see pictured. I could be wrong, but I bet he rarely even uses it for meals (I make art AND eat while sitting on the couch).
We could have spent days, weeks, minutes going through his stacks of books, magazines, catalogs, games (to use the gameboards), sardine cans, bones, markers, stamps, and drum roll----TRASH!! And I don't mean regular garbage.
RC picks up trash daily but it is very clean trash mainly food/candy wrappers and boxes.
I honestly didn't know this about him! He has rarely sent me trashpo.
Jim Leftwich may be Trashpo Jesus, but RC deserves a rightful place in Trashpo royalty! He is the Trashpope!!
He gave me a bag of hand plucked trash to make trashpo with. This is all I have made so far:
There IS something in my possession that I took without his knowledge. I was sneaky. He might reconsider having guests now. BUT, I feel ZERO remorse. I'd do it again. He has most likely discovered this missing item by now.
The best thing about this mystery item?? It is for sale!!
No, it isn't a vial of RC blood drawn by the Blood Queen LP,
or a lock of his hair--Better!
And it can be YOURS for $1,500!
(Copies are also available for $25, but it is not recommended as copy quality will suck and we will charge you shipping, handling, and tax)
Visa/Mastercard/Trash/Mail art/Love Donations Accepted!
I got this from his freezer!!!! I tore the back of this box off. And he thought he could guard his trash and keep it from me!! bwwwaaahaha.
Well, there is a length limit on blogger, so Part II is nearly at its end. I leave you with this:
RC had things for both of us in a box when we arrived. He gave me misc. things to use/or not for my art. Bones, art magazines, a pre-algebra book with handwritten homework, trash, a gauge, and more. In trash we trust.

Met Richard Canard and all I Got Was an Amazing Experience!! AND a T-shirt!! (PART I of II)
![]() |
| "Primitive" Pen and Ink Drawing by Richard Canard |
The mail artist known as #LuckyPierre organized a meeting between her, me, and Richard Canard--Mail Art Legend. This blog post is my attempt at encapsulating that experience. We have his express permission to post the following, although he might change his mind when he sees it. Would he really want everyone to know that his mother put him in tap as a kid?
It was a surreal experience driving on Emerald Lane and locating 409 South as I had been writing to for years. I always remembered it because my house number is 407 South, and Emerald is my daughter's middle name.
I saw a car pull in at the same time did. My son came with me and drove the 6 hours from Chicago. It was his first time driving a long road trip and he did great.
I was not surprised at the synchronicity of our timing. I got out and joked, "Why are you in Richard's driveway?" Turns out it was RC's sister and NOT LP. She understood that my rudeness was a misdirected joke and wasn't mad.
Then RC came out to meet us. He looked a bit different than I expected. Thin, Fit, with a gentle demeanor. He was more unassuming than I imagine but exuded kindness and hospitality. And there was LP! Her wild and beautiful hair was unmistakable.
She looked exactly as she does in pictures. I gave her a gift of vampire blood as she works with blood by profession and claims to be a vampire.
I wrote an article about her on my other blog (thetelepathtelegraph.blogspot.com--Interview with a Real Vampire or something to that effect http://thetelepathtelegraph.blogspot.com/2015/05/how-to-tell-if-your-friend-is-vampire.html). She put the fake blood on her face with a disturbing immediacy.
Our plan had been to cook RC dinner. RC is known for sending his (often absurd and nonsensical) philosophical words of wisdom on the back of food packaging and it seems that it was always microwave food. We concluded, incorrectly I might add, that he does not eat well.
We decided it was time to go shopping at the co-op. We took a little detour as RC showed us the Southern Illinois University Campus. He went straight to the library as he is a book worm like most of us. Right as we walked in we were drawn to a wall that was covered in large sticky notes.
It was a beautiful student project called "Take a poem, leave a poem". So appropriate as we are all familiar with RC's "poems"--pencils, dried leaves, etc. We must have spent 15 minutes playing with this and posting our own messages. You can't see from the picture, but we mentioned Dkult, John Bennett, Lisa Iversen, De Villo Sloan, Erni Barr Etc.
This was on the sidewalk--anarchy sign to me, Marla says it is a glyph with some kind of magical powers. I believe. Don't know what Rojava is, but it seems like something I might like.
He doesn't have Betty Davis eyes, but he has piercing blue Sinatra eyes. Looks like a guy who is thinking about mail art OR how he ended up with these two crazy chics in his car.
We went past a pavillion designed by Buckminster Fuller. I knew the name, but honestly didn't know who he was, thus I am not responsible if I just misspelled his name. RC drove us a very short distance to the Buckminster Fuller dome house. It was fenced in and locked up tight. It was empty, but RC said students had lived there in the past. How lucky were they? Hope they realized it.
Marla had the idea that we should send mail here. And what is this with the addresses? 409 S. Emerald, 407 S. Liberty and now 407 S. Forest?
Next we went to the co-op and bought things to cook for dinner. Marla, Mason, and I cooked while RC and I had a war over the pantry door. I kept opening it to throw stuff away, he kept shutting it. He finally put the trash can out by the stove. What he didn't realize was that my plan was to steal his trash and make art for him out of it. NO garbage in there except what I put in!!!!! He must have known about my nefarious plot.
I had brought aprons for Marla and me to wear for our Feed the Richard event. He mostly eats out and seemed to view his kitchen as unchartered land-the spoons, bowls, pans, and 10 year old sugar ancient artifacts.
He seems to have a problem with people trying to buy his shelves, although it looks like the bottom shelf is still available for sale. Place your bids!
I saw a black spider and RC and LC are the kind of people that don't kill them. I was fully prepared to enjoy stomping on it, but at the last minute, they saved its life.
Poor RC, this is where I made him put on the rose apron for the photo shoot, but he rocked it!
Marla looking sassy of course!!! Look at this New Yorker now! Wearing a Gingham apron in the cornfields of the Midwest. What's next?

A friend of RCs came over and stayed for dinner. He was a wonderful 14 kid that was way beyond his years. He and Mason hit it off. They were discussing Islam, Islamaphobia, prayer etc and he never said a word about the apron.
The meal was awesome. The dessert was 'eclectic'.
